Recent federal crime data indicates that Buffalo, New York, continues to experience elevated violent crime rates compared to national averages. In 2021, the city reported a violent crime rate of 1,019.25 incidents per 100,000 residents, encompassing offenses such as murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. This figure is significantly higher than both the national average of 367 per 100,000 and New York State's average of 358 per 100,000 during the same period.
Despite these concerning statistics, recent local reports suggest a downward trend in certain violent crimes. In 2024, Buffalo recorded approximately 150 shooting victims, a substantial decrease from the over 350 incidents reported in both 2020 and 2021. Additionally, the city reported 30 homicides in 2024, down from 60 in 2021 and 54 in 2022.
